CIRCUMSTANCES
In June of 2009, Corey was residing in the are of 189 Drummond Switch Cut-Off Road in the town of Empire, in Walker County.
At the time of his disappearance, Corey had one young child and another child on the way.
On June 18, 2009 Corey had stopped by his uncle’s home to visit him. Corey told his uncle that he was going to straighten out an issue with a man who had owed him money. This would be last time Corey was seen or heard from.
Corey’s family, most of whom lived out of state, filed a missing person report with Walker County Sheriff the following May.
Walker County Sheriff’s Departments has spent hours investigating the circumstances behind Corey’s disappearance, including countless interviews, search warrants, and dive operations in various bodies of water. Law Enforcement officials have strong reason to believe foul play is involved.
Investigator Ralph Williams stated they have a suspect and a few accomplices known to be involved in Corey’s disappearance but are missing some key information.
In May of 2012, then Governor, Robert Bentley, announced a $5,000 reward for any information that would lead to an arrest and conviction of anyone involved in Corey’s disappearance.
In June of 2019, investigators received new information that led them to a home near Stacks Bottom Road in the Empire area. During that search, a cadaver dog led them to a few areas on the property. Investigators collected additional evidence but details of that evidence was not been released to the public.
As with most missing person cases, someone knows something but the fear of threats will often keep people silent. In Corey’s case, it is no different. One individual did try to come to forward and later received death threats. It is apparent that whomever is responsible for the disappearance of Corey Smith has been a threat to those who may hold the missing piece.
Corey’s family is desperate for answers and closure. While they believe that something sinister may have happened to Corey, closure is now what they seek. They would like answers and to just bring Corey home.
